During the fall rut (September through early October) we'll have part day and full day horseback rides in the heart of the PA Elk range from our private lands of over 1600 acres bordering the Quehanna Wild Area. From this location we have access to both our private lands and many thousands of acres of State Forest land in which to find elk.
Your dedicated and knowledgeable guide for the day can take you to remote and isolated places so you can truly experience elk in the PA Wilds. We scout the area and study the herd movements so our guests have the best chance of viewing elk and hearing the bugling bulls. These trips get you out in the elk habitat - not standing around a viewing platform with hundreds of other visitors. Horses allow us to get closer to wildlife as deer and elk are typically less fearful of horses and riders. Prime elk viewing time is early in the morning and dusk. These rides will meet in the afternoon so that we are in the saddle when the elk viewing is best. Plan to finish your ride in near dark as our trustworthy mounts return you to the corral. Mountain Trail Horse Center, our sister company that has been taking trail riders out for nearly 30 years, is providing great horses and knowledgeable guides for these once in a lifetime trips. These rides meet near Sinnemahoning, PA which is approximately 90 miles southwest of Wellsboro. The drive is a scenic trip through beautiful areas. Part-Day Ride with Meal You'll meet us in the late afternoon for this ride and we will match your abilities with one of our dependable horses. As the horses are being saddled by our wranglers, you'll join your guide for our famous pre-ride talk – a lesson in safety and basic horsemanship. Our pre-ride talk can take almost hour, but we believe that providing our guests with quality instruction and information is what being a top outfitter is all about. We'll ride through rugged and varied terrain – open, wooded, fixed trails, bushwhacking – all scenic. We will provide a bagged meal to eat along the way. The total length of this experience is between four and five hours. This ride is at a walking pace and is suitable for riders ages 8 and up.
Weekday: $125/person Weekend/Holiday: $140/person Full-Day Ride with Meal
You'll meet us earlier in the day and get more saddle time with better chances to see the elk on a full day ride. Spend a day exploring our vast, open woodlands on horseback with quality guides and our renowned trail horses. We'll seek out elk with a focus on the bugling bulls. Expect rougher terrain and more challenging riding, including controlled canters and gallops. A hearty meal is provided. As with all of our rides, this includes our famous pre-ride instruction, first class guides and well-trained horses. This ride is suitable for riders 12 and older. You should plan to start in the early afternoon and spend the rest of the day with us, returning in the dark. Weekday: $175/person Weekend/Holiday: $200/person
