Wetlands and Waterfalls

Combine waterfalls, a natural bog, a ghost town, and loads of wildlife and plants, and what do you get? . . . an enjoyable and educational trip for all ages. That pretty well sums up our Waterfalls in Coal Country trip.

This trip is a full day, beginning with a visit to a natural bog, where several unique plants live. Get your feet wet (or wear waterproof boots) as we look for native cranberries, the carnivorous sundew and pitcher plants, and other boggy features. You'll stop at other natural wetlands along the way to look for wildlife, like muskrats, beaver, Great Blue Herons, turtles, and others. Next, you'll visit some acid mine reclamation sites to see how the impacts of coal mining from the past centuries are being mitigated today to renew the ecology of the streams in this area. Then, an easy hike to a cool waterfall to see the natural beauty of a clean mountain stream. Be on the watch for our native brook trout or other residents. Finally, visit a historic ghost town from the coal mining era and learn about the days gone by.
